Well, that was pretty easy, Martha thought as she made her way up the pathway that led to the front gate. She carefully opened the cast-iron gate, stepped through it and, just as carefully, closed it again; making sure the catch was down firmly.

If asked to list some of the most outrageous things she had ever done, this would be one of them. Not the most outrageous, but it was definitely up there. It was everyday that someone claimed they had stolen a Turkey from their Mother for a Christmas dinner with an Alien and his friends in his Space Ship stroke Time Machine.

She grinned and continued to walk down the road, patting the contents of her jeans pocket in thanks. It had been really easy to let herself into the house, make her way to the kitchen and stuff the Turkey (wrapped in tin foil) into her backpack. Her Mother had come into the kitchen just as she was zipping up and she froze, making sure not to make a sound. Francine has just stopped, frowned at point about a foot to the left of her and then went back into the living room. Martha had then made a quick escape; thanking the Perception Filter key with all her heart.

She should feel guilty, and Martha had to admit that a part of her did. A small part of her. it was wrong after all, but it was only a Turkey. She would be replacing it tomorrow and her Mother would never know.

She shook off her thoughts and continued back to the TARDIS.

The Doctor shouldered the shopping bags as he and Rose made their way back to the TARDIS.

"Right. Peas, bananas, and cake. Did we forget anything?"
miss_rosetyler on August 5th, 2007 11:40 pm (UTC)
They did not have potatoes to roast, or carrots. They did not have prawns or even cranberry sauce but Rose simply laughed and held the TARDIS door open for the Doctor and his Christmas burden. "I'm sure what we've got will be fine." She assured him and patted the small of his back when he bustled past.

It would be fine. Rose believed whole-heartedly in that fact, because there was nothing wrong with throwing tradition out the window. They would all at least be happily stuffed on turkey and peas and bananas and cake.

She allowed herself to forget that neither she nor the Doctor knew if the bird Martha was pinching from her mum was even thawed or not. Add an extra bunch of hours for cooking, she grimly realized. Her grumbling stomach realized as well.

Martha struggled through the TARDIS doors with not one but two Turkey's. The one she had stolen from her mother was in a rucksack on her back. The second one in a carrier bag, frozen but starting to thaw. She made her way to the kitchen and unceremoniously dumped the frozen Turkey on the table.

"Right," she said, sliding the heavy bag from her back. "One Turkey; cooked and ready to be eaten. Well, once it's been in oven for about 10 minutes to warm through again."

She looked to Rose and The Doctor with a smile, "Get the rest of the stuff?"
justthedoctor10justthedoctor10 on August 7th, 2007 01:17 pm (UTC)
The Doctor smiled at her. "Peas, bananas and cake."
Martha Jones: Woman, Doctor, and Defender of Earth: Martha: Laughmj_storyteller on August 7th, 2007 01:42 pm (UTC)
Martha blinked. Peas, bananas and cake?

"I don't suppose you got any potatos for roasting, did you?" she shook her head with a smile, "Never mind. We'll just have to have an non-conventional Christmas dinner."
justthedoctor10justthedoctor10 on August 7th, 2007 01:47 pm (UTC)
He blinked and looked a little disappointed. "I didn't know there were supposed to be potatoes..."
Martha Jones: Woman, Doctor, and Defender of Earth: Martha: Arrowmj_storyteller on August 7th, 2007 01:53 pm (UTC)
"Normally, yes." she said, opening her rucksack and pulling out the arge lump of time foil that contained the Turkey. She gave him a cheeky smile "But then again, when is anything normal when you are concerned, Doctor?"
justthedoctor10justthedoctor10 on August 7th, 2007 03:10 pm (UTC)
He sighed and smiled. "Suppose that's true. Turkey mission go okay?"
miss_rosetyler on August 7th, 2007 05:23 pm (UTC)
Rose grinned from behind the Doctor. "Thought it best not to set him straight on the potatoes issue. Once he gets his heart set on bananas.." She trailed off and rolled her eyes. She put forward more enthusiasm, having come to terms with Martha's presence at their Christmas dinner.

"The turkey smells gorgeous, by the way." The outside chill had left a flush on Rose's face and it seemed to intensify as she smiled.

A cranky Rose was best made pleasant again by the promise of good food, and this situation was no exception. There was still a turbulent wave of animosity towards Martha, but it could be swept into a corner so long as dinner was about to happen.

Martha Jones: Woman, Doctor, and Defender of Earth: Martha: Look Bottom-Rightmj_storyteller on August 7th, 2007 05:32 pm (UTC)
"Piece of cake." she said, "Just slid in, stuffed the turkey in the bag and slid back out again. Mum came in the kitchen once, but didn't see me thank god."

Martha grinned at Rose's comment, "Oh, I know! He'd have banana's for every meal if he could."

She noticed that rose was making a bit more of an effort, and that pleased Martha. Jealousy stil bubbled within her, but it was going to take her some time to get that sorted. For now, at least, Christmas dinner wasn't going to be as awkward as she'd expected it to be.
justthedoctor10justthedoctor10 on August 8th, 2007 12:55 am (UTC)
The Doctor gave both women a crestfallen look. "We coulda gotten both bananas and potatoes. I've nothing against potatoes. Potatoes make chips, but Rose said that you can't have chips on Christmas. So I just assumed..."

He pulled at his ear. "Anyways, I should have some wine sitting around somewhere." He wandered around the kitchen, pulling open cabinets to look.
miss_rosetyler on August 8th, 2007 03:42 pm (UTC)
Rose reached out to pat the Doctor's shoulder. "Bananas are fine, 'sides, not such a bad idea to shake it up a bit. Forget the potatoes." Her fingers squeezed lightly.

It was endearing, really. To see the Doctor slip up on something so fundamentally traditional about a human practice. Even if it was a little bit her fault. Alright, it was a lot of her fault, but Rose had the distinct impression that she remembered outlining the difference between chips and roast potatoes and their relative roles in a Christmas dinner.

Oh well. No matter. Bridge under the water. My, wasn't her stomach grumbling?

"No potatoes jus' means that we've got less to actually cook!" Rose grins and wanders through the kitchen, helping the Doctor hunt down his wine.
Martha Jones: Woman, Doctor, and Defender of Earthmj_storyteller on August 8th, 2007 03:54 pm (UTC)
"Yep!" Martha agreed, taking the now defrosted Turkey and stuffing it in the oven. She moved around the kitchen grabbing a plate and a carving knife. She set to carving the Turkey.

"So," she said, trying to get conversation going, "Anyone got any hilarious Christmas stories to tell?"
justthedoctor10justthedoctor10 on August 8th, 2007 04:14 pm (UTC)
The Doctor spotted the old bottle of wine hiding behind some crackers and pulled it out.

"Well...the only Christmas dinner I've ever had...I regenerated, and Rose's mum woke me up tea and I had a sword fight. And lost my hand. You remember the hand, Martha. Jack had it for a good bit."
miss_rosetyler on August 8th, 2007 04:54 pm (UTC)
Rose was pulling items out of the shopping bag, humming carols as she went. She was going to launch into a story of how last Christmas Jackie had insisted on doing the cooking herself. By the end of Pete's fancy kitchen had actually caught on fire...But Rose's tale was pre-empted by the Doctor. She smiled at the memory. She had managed to get him into one of those paper hats from a cracker.

Her reminiscence was brought to a grinding halt when the Doctor mentioned Jack.

"Jack had your hand?" Rose spluttered and caught onto the edge of a cabinet to support her laughter. "Our Captain Jack? Didn't it go flyin' off the Sycorax ship?"

Martha Jones: Woman, Doctor, and Defender of Earthmj_storyteller on August 8th, 2007 04:59 pm (UTC)
Martha paused in her carving and looked up at Rose. "You were there? When his hand was...." a shudder made it's way through her, "was cut off?"
justthedoctor10justthedoctor10 on August 8th, 2007 04:59 pm (UTC)
"Yeah, it did," The Doctor replied, searching for a bottle opener. "He found it, Rassilon knows how, and was using it to locate me." He grinned a little. "You shoulda seen Martha's face when she saw that hand in a jar."

He found the bottle opener and then crossed to the refrigerator to get some ice.
Martha Jones: Woman, Doctor, and Defender of Earthmj_storyteller on August 8th, 2007 05:02 pm (UTC)
"Can you blame me?" she said, turning to The Doctor and giving him a look, "It was your hand. In a jar."
miss_rosetyler on August 8th, 2007 05:11 pm (UTC)
"Forget the hand, I was there when he regenerated." Rose grinned and chucked a banana across the room to the Doctor.

"He used to have gigantic ears. It was even harder to take him seriously with big old ears flapping about."

Rose quirked her eyebrows and laughed.
Martha Jones: Woman, Doctor, and Defender of Earthmj_storyteller on August 8th, 2007 05:26 pm (UTC)
Martha blinked, and then burst out laughing. She had to put the knife down and step away from the Turkey, lest she accidentally cut herself.

"Oh my god, the image of you with big ears!"
justthedoctor10justthedoctor10 on August 8th, 2007 06:08 pm (UTC)
The Doctor gave them both a bitter look. "Excuse me, it's not like I can control what I look like when I regenerate. It was me with big ears. I looked wholly different. And you, Rose Tyler, liked those ears, if I remember correctly."

He pulled a bucket out and filled it with ice before sticking the bottle of wine into it.
miss_rosetyler on August 8th, 2007 06:16 pm (UTC)
She indulged the Doctor's bitterness with a warm smile. "They certainly added character. I liked them, sure...doesn't mean they made it any easier to take your seriously."

She rinsed the peas and tossed them into a saucepan, believing that they would not take too long to cook.

"He's right though, he did look completely different. Wore a leather jacket, hair wasn't so big. Sounded like he was from the north."

The smile stuck; It was fueled by fond memories.
Martha Jones: Woman, Doctor, and Defender of Earthmj_storyteller on August 8th, 2007 06:25 pm (UTC)
Martha bit her lip, fighting off the giggles and went back to carving the Turkey.

"Form the North you say?" she glanced up and saw Rose's fond smile. Her heart twinged, but she ignored it. "Leather Jacket? Sounds...very different."
justthedoctor10justthedoctor10 on August 8th, 2007 06:28 pm (UTC)
The Doctor shook his head. "I liked that jacket...s'too bad it's too big for me now...mind you, it probably wouldn't go with the suit...and I don't usually make a habit of backtracking my wardrobe."

He glanced at Rose and then Martha. "Like I told Rose: Lots of planets have a north."

Even if I am from the south of my planet, he thought.
miss_rosetyler on August 8th, 2007 06:38 pm (UTC)
She prodded at the peas with a fork, stirring them up and skittering backwards when steam shot out from the saucepan. Learned her cooking from Jackie, this one. Still, it was just peas, right? Rose Tyler could handle peas.

"It was a nice jacket." Rose said, tapping the fork lightly against her palm.

"He wore lots of jumpers," she spoke directly too Martha this time. Her eyes hit somewhere to the left of Martha's shoulder for the first few words but soon her gaze slid properly to the other woman's face. "Whenever we went anywhere in the past and he made me change into period clothing he got off by telling me he'd changed his jumper and that was enough."

At least they found common ground in the Doctor, Rose mused.
